Dear Editor,
Having recently stumbled across another reader's letter in last month's edition, I am writing to inform you of my severe disagreement with the sentiment that songs with foul language have a negative influence on society. Whilst I remain entirely in accordance with the idea that we are all entitled to our own opinions, I wish to distance myself completely from the notion that these songs are the cause of many of today's social problems.
Not too long ago I found myself a little stranded and isolated in my own life. It was only through the means of music that I regained my strength and willpower to fight on, through the struggles and strives we all must conquer in our day to day life. To think that we should try to censor this art-form appears both illogical and unfair, isn't it? What would that solve? Without these aforementioned 'foul words' the music will not be the same and consequently neither will its effects! Instead of standing by and criticizing these song makers, perhaps we can appreciate their art and attempt to overlook some of their vices.
Since Martin Luther's famous words upon the subject of freedom of speech, many people have used music as a way to channel their emotions. Of course there will be times that these same emotions can spill over and cause artists to use foul language, yet what is the harm in that? Did anyone force you to listen to that song? Ultimately we are all responsible for the choices that we make and parents have an important role to play in protecting their children from things which they deem dangerous. I don't however believe that it is our place to tell them what those things are. Nor, would I suggest, should we do so. Would you tell a stranger when to eat or sleep? We must all consider our own positions within society.
I do, however, understand that many people will argue these songs will, most obviously, have a negative influence on young children. To some extent I can concur with that statement but I am fairly confident in asserting that those same children would find those foul words without the music anyway. Moreover there must be more pressing issues at large with young children these days, such as alcohol and drug abuse. Music can of course be seen as damaging to society as a whole, yet instead I prefer to concentrate on the good it can do. I can honestly say that I am here today through the help of music.
Yours faithfully

高水準範文示例 2 (S1-S3 Level) (由Kevin Chan 撰寫)
Dear Diary,
Today was the first rehearsal for my new play. The play is entitled 'Flying without Wings' and depicts a young boy's rise from poverty to the dizzy heights of movie stardom. His journey is a long and fraught one. Along the way he is challenged by many different obstacles, and the play's focus centres on his struggles.
The rehearsal started off rather routinely with the normally preparation and setting up that is involved in these types of projects. However late in the day we started to have some problems with our lead actor whose attention span seemed to wan as the day dragged on. Not only did he forget the majority of his lines but he inadvertently spilt some coffee onto one of the volunteer helpers, resulting in utter chaos. Sometimes I wonder why I hire these moody actors? I guess I base my hiring solely on acting merits and perhaps that is a mistake!
Due to the various misdemeanors that occurred throughout the day, I would have to say that the rehearsal was a universal failure. The amount of time and effort I have put into this project looks entirely wasted. There were some positives for sure, which were mainly that I enjoyed the performance of some of the supporting actors - perhaps I should give them a more staring role! Yet my joy at their efforts was both short-lived and more significantly overshadowed by various problems created by the severe shortage of acting talent on display from the lead and supporting actors and actresses!
A vast amount of improvements need to be made between now and the subsequent rehearsal. I would say firstly the entire props department needs a shake up! The misplaced clothing made me finally concede it might be better just to do the props myself! Moreover there needs to be a lot more developed scenery for the next rehearsal: asking someone to climb a tree when the only scenery we had was a plastic pig is not much good! Lastly there need to be great improvements in the performance of the aforementioned lead actor.
Reflecting on the first rehearsal as a whole I would say I have learnt my lesson!
